Can I Compost pet bedding in the HotBin?

Tuesday, 8 April 2014  |  HOTBIN Composting

Pet bedding tends to be either wood shavings, sawdust or pellets of paper/wood. These can be added to the HotBin.

If you have more than 10 litres (a full bucket), enure it is mixed with other materials such as food or grass. Excess amounts of sawdust and or paper based bedding can create a solid layer that restricts airflow (aeration). Look out for signs of solid lumps and break up using rake. You may need to experiment with the amount of bedding that can be composted as it will vary with the other materials you have available - in particular food waste, grass and other soft weeds and cuttings.

It is easier to compost wet/urine stained bedding than dry bedding.

You can compare the speeds and rates of composting for various wood based products (office paper, newspaper card, sawdust etc).
