Dry compost, should I add water?

4 February 2012  |  HOTBIN Composting

As a rule, do not add liquids (water, urine, soups, gravy) to the HOTBIN.

Occasionally small areas of the compost in the centre of the bin may appear dry with a white/powdery fungus on. This is a sign of ‘preferential’ drying through oversize air channels. Rake new waste into the dry area and then gently push down the waste to close the air channels. After adding more waste, recheck the temperature and waste after 48 hours.

If the waste still appears dry, add no more than one cupful of hot water (the hotter the better).
