Mature compost, What is mature compost?

10 October 2013  |  HOTBIN Composting

Mature compost is crumbly and dark brown and you should not be able to identify the former materials (eg a banana skin, leaf, etc). It should smell earthy / musty.

It is said to be mature, as the majority of bacteria are no longer active, (they have consumed what they can).
In this state, compost will provide nutrient rather than rob nitrogen from your soil and plants.
